  1. The next great Russian pairs skaters after
  2. the Protopopovs were Irina Rodnina and
  3. Aleksander Zaitsev. Although Irina won the
  4. 1972 Olympic pairs competition with
  5. Aleksei Ulanov, they split up after the
  6. Games. Irina found a new partner,
  7. Aleksander. They fell in love and were
  8. married in 1975. The next year they won the
  9. gold medal at the Olympics. In 1978, Irina
  10. won her 10th straight world championship
  11. (four with Aleksei, six with Aleksander). She
  12. took the next year off to have a baby, but the
  13. pair made a blazing comeback at the 1980
  14. Olympics. Irina and Aleksander skated
  15. perfectly, and all nine judges placed them
  16. first! Irina had won her third Olympic gold
  17. medal.
